Here at Dynamic, a precision parts manufacturer in Illinois, we come across a fair number of acronyms in our work. 

There’s CNC (computer numerical control), CAD (computer assisted design), and CAM (computer aided manufacturing). And that’s just the beginning. 

The acronyms we use are pretty straightforward, but there are other people who get a little more creative with their acronyms>

For example, BEST is a popular acronym. According to The Free Dictionary, it has 74 meanings, including:

  • Bio-Electrical Stimulation Therapy
  • Belize Enterprise for Sustainable Technology

BEST seems to be a popular choice among U.S. agencies: 

  • At NASA, it stands for Black Employee Strategy Team 
  • At the Social Security Administration, it means Benefit Eligibility Screening Tool 
  • At FEMA, it is used to mean Building Engagement, Strengths and Talent 

 

The folks at Your Dictionary got clever and offered up some acronyms for the word “ACRONYM” that actually make sense:

  • ELI5: Explain Like I’m 5 (years old) (Apparently, this one is used on Reddit a lot.)
